Feeling overwhelmed by a long list of symptoms that don’t seem to

fit neatly into one diagnosis? If yes, you might want to keep reading...

Ayurveda offers a refreshingly simple yet profound answer: almost every health issue can be traced back to an imbalance in one (or more) of three fundamental energies called doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

This is what I love most about Ayurveda. Instead of drowning in hundreds of different diagnoses symptoms, it gives us a simple, elegant framework. Once you spot your dominant imbalance, all those “random” complaints—anxious thoughts, digestive issues, skin flare-ups, fatigue—suddenly make sense. They’re just different expressions of the same underlying pattern.

Almost all of us have at least one dosha out of balance right now. It’s very common to have two, and in long-term or chronic conditions, all three can be disturbed at once.

Of course, for complex or serious health issues, nothing replaces working one-on-one with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. That said, there are plenty of safe, gentle steps you can take on your own to start feeling better—today.

My simple starting advice:

Look at the signs below, notice which dosha your current symptoms match the most, then begin adopting the foods, routines, and habits that naturally calm that dosha. Start small—one or two changes at a time—and pay attention to how your body responds. Slow and steady wins every time.

The Doshas...

Signs of Vata Imbalance (Air + Space)

Qualities: dry, light, cold, rough, mobile, irregular

•  Dry skin, hair, lips, or constipation (hard, dry, small stools)

•  Cold hands and feet, poor circulation

•  Unintentional weight loss or difficulty gaining weight

•  Gas, bloating, gurgling intestines, irregular digestion/appetite/menstruation

•  Anxiety, restlessness, racing mind, insomnia (mind won’t switch off)

•  Scattered thinking, talking fast, feeling “ungrounded”

•  Variable or wandering pain (joint pain that moves around, nerve pain)

•  Tremors, spasms, cracking joints

•  “Wired but tired” exhaustion

•  Fear, insecurity, spaciness

Classic red flags: constipation + insomnia + feeling scattered.

Signs of Pitta Imbalance (Fire + a little Water)

Qualities: hot, sharp, light, oily, penetrating

•  Burning sensations (heartburn, acidic stomach, burning urine)

•  Inflammation, rashes, acne, red or bloodshot eyes

•  Intense hunger or thirst (hangry if meals are late)

•  Loose, yellowish, burning stools or diarrhoea

•  Irritability, impatience, criticism, frustration, anger that flares fast

•  Headaches (sharp, focused at temples or behind eyes), migraines

•  Excessive sweating or strong body odour

•  Perfectionism, competitiveness, workaholism, burnout

•  Sour taste in mouth, bleeding gums, nosebleeds, heavy periods

Classic red flags: burning anywhere + quick temper + red tongue tip.

Signs of Kapha Imbalance (Water + Earth)

Qualities: heavy, slow, cold, oily, stable, damp

•  Lethargy, heaviness, hard to get out of bed, sleeping 9–10+ hours

•  Easy weight gain, fluid retention, puffy face

•  Excess mucus, sinus congestion, chest congestion, post-nasal drip

•  Oily skin/hair, clammy hands

•  Slow digestion, feeling heavy after eating, low appetite

•  Sweet cravings, nausea in the morning

•  Brain fog, dullness, difficulty concentrating

•  Depression, sadness, attachment, resistance to change

•  Thick white coating on tongue, sweet/salty taste in mouth

•  Frequent colds, feeling damp and cold inside

Classic red flags: sleeping a lot yet still tired + weight gain + white-coated tongue.

Take a quiet moment and see which list feels most like “you” right now. (It’s completely normal to relate to parts of more than one!)

In my next post, I’ll share exactly how to calm and balance each dosha with simple, everyday diet tips, routines, herbs, and lifestyle habits you can start using immediately—no overwhelm required.

Which dosha stood out the most for you? Drop it in the comments—I’d love to know!
